FLYDENDE TÆPPE
SITE-SPECIFIC INSTALLATION, FOAM MAT WITH VINYL PRINT (182 x 300 CM), 2018
Outside the architectural landmark “The Wave” in the water of Vejle Fjord a Persian carpet is slowly rocking in the sunlit surface. Evoking images of flying carpets from folktales of the Orient the carpet might speak directly to collective cultural references and the construction of history through folklore and mainstream culture franchises.
The carpet also constitutes the framework for a social space, bringing people together in the home, on the street or in community spaces, depending on cultures and geographies. A social space for contemplation and intimacy. Floating in the surface of the water the carpet speaks of new meeting spaces - away from land. Dreams of possible alternative ways to experience and construct collectivity and society, away from the norms and laws of main land, are offered.
Designed to accommodate a group of people while still keeping afloat, the floating carpet is an invitation to think of new forms of being together. And as the body inescapably comes into contact with the water of the Fjord, the boundaries between motif and environment blurs further
